How To Access A Hidden Page In Joomla

E-mail Print PDF
Some times I have wanted to be able to access a page on my Joomla! site that noone else know how to access. Like i.e. a page showing the available typography for the Joomla! 1.5 template that I am using. Not that it is a secret, but it is unnecessary information for the users of my web site. I am the only one that needs to know about it.

This is not difficult to do, and there might be several ways to do it, but here is a simple tutorial showing how I have done this.
As an example, let us use my lack of memory... The template that I am using for my Joomla! site is ja_purity_ii from JoomlArt.com. When I write articles/blog posts I like to just copy and paste from the typography page that comes with this template.

The page I have created I can access through my link: http://joomlabeacon.net/catchall/catchall/puritys-typography.html.

Here are the very simple steps:
  1. The first thing we need to do is to create a secion and a category that we can assign an article to.
I chose to name my section "CatchAll". Then I created a category, also named "CatchAll", and connected it to the "CatchAll" section. You can choose whatever names you prefer.

  2. The second thing we need to do is to write the article with the information that you want to show.
I finished the page/article and assigned this article/page to the "CatchAll" category.

  3. The third step is to create a menu item that shows the article/page that has the information we need.
I created a new menu item and chose the "Article Layout"

    Menu Article Layout

The placement of the menu item is not important. It is important, though, that you mark it as not enabled.

Well, that should be it. We are now ready to access our page. The URL to your "hidden" page should be:

http://yoursite.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=126

...where the number at the end should be replaced by the id on the article that you created under point # 2.

Since I use sh404SEF on my webpage, I can also access my "hidden" typography page by using this URL:

http://joomlabeacon.net/catchall/catchall/puritys-typography.html

This is how I do it. If there are other ways to do it, please let me know by leaving a comment. :-)
